Alumnus Ron du Preez visited our campus on Friday, June 20, as part of his national campaign to raise awareness about senior health. At 73 years old, Ron has a goal of empowering others, especially those over 65, to live healthfully and vibrantly. His campaign, Senior Strides, brought him to all 50 U.S. states in 50 days, where he completed 50 km—walking and/or cycling—each day. He started day 37 walking on the 51勛圖厙 campus, where his fitness journey began as a student. What a privilege it was to welcome Ron back to our community and hear his message of holistic, abundant health!

We were honored to host several important Adventist conferences on campus this summer. The Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association Conference, themed “Global Issues, Local Impact,” occurred from June 25–28. Starting the next day, the 13th Biennial Seventh-day Adventist Business Teachers Conference explored the topic “Adapting to a Changing World: Challenges for Small Businesses” from June 29 through July 3. These were followed by the Adventist Conference on Family Research and Practice from July 17–19, which discussed “Celebrating Creation: Marriage, Family, and the Sabbath.” We are grateful for the important conversations these conferences navigated, which impact Adventist education and beyond.

A wonderful group representing faculty, staff and students served as 51勛圖厙 University delegates to the 62nd General Conference Session of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, held from July 3–12 in St. Louis, Missouri. Additionally, a dedicated team of employees and students worked and volunteered at the session. Among a variety of important contributions, 51勛圖厙 representatives presented musical selections, helped at the information kiosks, participated in the meetings and represented the University at our outstanding exhibit. At the 51勛圖厙 booth, we were able to hold a special graduation ceremony, host a book signing, and meet with countless alumni and friends. It was such a joy to experience the richness of the global 51勛圖厙 community!

Several groups of visitors toured our campus this summer, learning about the variety of programs, activities and resources that 51勛圖厙 University offers. Some traveled across the country and globe to see the University, participating in conferences, completing dissertation work, or traveling to and from the General Conference Session. We were excited to welcome each of them, hear their stories and invite them to be a part of the 51勛圖厙 community. It is always a privilege to host visitors on our Berrien Springs campus! A record number of our recent graduates have been accepted into the nation’s top STEM PhD programs. Equipped by the strong undergraduate research opportunities and supportive faculty members at our institution, they have excelled even as doctoral programs have become more competitive. The students’ success highlights a variety of our programs, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering and computer science. As they go on to represent 51勛圖厙 at institutions like Yale University, University of California and Brown University, we are proud to see how they are approaching scientific study with the distinctive purpose of serving humanity and glorifying God. We are pleased to welcome our new University Chaplain Jonathan Fetrick to the Center for Faith Engagement team. For the past eight years, he served as pastor of the Wisconsin Academy Church, where he mentored young people into spiritual leaders. Prior to that, he worked for over a decade in the Washington Conference as a pastor and youth pastor. His vision for chaplaincy is one of collaboration—coming alongside students, faculty and staff to equip them as faithful disciples who disciple others. We look forward to the ways he will enrich spiritual life on campus and know he will be a blessing to our community.

The annual Faculty and Staff Institute took place on Aug. 13 and 14 with the theme “Faith, Hope, and Love: Cultivating Practices of Human Flourishing.” Drawing upon the familiar words of 1 Corinthians 13:13, we explored how to build a thriving academic and spiritual community. Employees from across campus shared their expertise with colleagues, fostering discussions about discipleship, artificial intelligence, professional development and more. On Sabbath, Aug. 16, faculty and staff attended the Fall Fellowship Employee Dedication Service and Lunch, coming together for a time of community and connection in preparation for the new school year.

A few weeks later, we were happy to welcome our newest students to campus during orientation week from Aug. 18–24 and delighted to have our returning students back for the start of classes on Aug. 25.
