At the beginning of March, in collaboration with Pioneer Memorial Church and other partners, Pastor Don MacLafferty joined us for a special conference titled “More+: Because What We Have Is Not Enough.” Each evening, he walked us through the story of the prophet Elijah, sharing through interactive presentations, demonstrations and discussions how we can be used by God to revive and disciple our homes and communities. During the day, he invited us to join him in active prayer for our community. I praise God for such an amazing experience of revival and discipleship on our campus!

A group of senior nursing students and faculty from our School of Nursing worked with the New Heights Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) to offer free blood pressure screenings and health education sessions at the New Heights CCDA Laundry Hub in Benton Heights, Michigan. The sessions were designed to address high blood pressure, a critical health issue within the community. Throughout the months of March and April, community members had the opportunity to learn from our students and faculty about lifestyle choices that promote cardiovascular health. This project was a wonderful opportunity to live out our shared commitment to improve community health and to foster hope through service. (Photo by Joseph Amaya)

During the spring semester, we celebrated several milestones in our history and reflected on how our past experiences can shape our future. From March 10–12, Adventist scholars, including George Knight, Gilbert Valentine and others, presented a series of historical sketches about key individuals and events related to 51勛圖厙 University. On March 11, we filled a with books, signed programs and other significant items from recent years. Our community gathered to assist with the time capsule interment, which was accompanied by a special live performance of “Our 51勛圖厙 U” from the 51勛圖厙 University Wind Symphony. While the time capsule is set to be opened in 2075, we are committed meanwhile to hastening the coming of Jesus. Maranatha!

We were honored to host the third annual North American Hyve International Conference from March 27–29. The gathering, planned in partnership between Hyve International and our Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, allowed students, entrepreneurs, ministry leaders and businesspeople to network with fellow innovators and pitch their ideas to investors. Throughout the weekend, participants attended various workshops, programs and competitions, learning how to cultivate strong businesses in ways that glorify God. Multiple worship opportunities also took place, including a vespers program to open the Sabbath. I was proud to see that so many of our 51勛圖厙 students participated and presented throughout the event, representing our University exceptionally well.

From April 3–5, our campus hosted the “Anabaptist Conference: Living the Christian Life.” The conference marked the 500th anniversary of the Anabaptist movement, bringing together Mennonites and Adventists to reflect on the movement’s past, present and future. Through various keynote addresses, a panel discussion and paper presentations, scholars discussed the Anabaptist movement’s emphases on discipleship, community and peace. Our University has a history of dialogue with the nearby Goshen College and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary. We were delighted to collaborate with colleagues from these institutions, discussing shared beliefs, including the thoughtful decision to be baptized, and the influence of the Anabaptist movement on our Seventh-day Adventist faith.

As part of the North American Division’s initiative—which will include more than 5,000 evangelism events throughout this year—we dedicated and shipped 8,000 51勛圖厙 Study Bibles for use in public evangelism meetings across the division. This special Outreach Edition of the Bible has been the standard gift or presentation Bible in Adventist evangelism since its original release in 2012. It contains more than 12,000 study notes and a one-of-a-kind, in-depth linked reference system highlighting the great themes of the Christian faith, making it very popular with evangelists introducing new believers to a comprehensive system of biblical truth. At 51勛圖厙 University we are committed to being involved in evangelism in personal and tangible ways!

Throughout May and June, we have been excited to welcome back to continue the updates to Lamson Hall, our women’s residence hall. Already, the changes have made an incredible difference in the lives of our students. This year’s transformations include painting, laying carpet and updating bathrooms and furnishings. We are so grateful to each of the volunteers, in conjunction with our dedicated Facilities Management team, for improving the lives of our students! We also deeply appreciate the significant contributions that have been made by the President’s Council, the Board of Trustees and each individual donor to this project.

Our spring graduation ceremonies took place from May 1–4. In addition to program-specific events and ceremonies, the weekend included a Commencement service on Friday, two Baccalaureate church services on Sabbath and two Commencement services on Sunday. This was the first year that all Commencement services took place in the multipurpose hall of the Andreasen Center for Wellness, allowing more family and friends to attend. We are grateful to our Graduation Committee for their exceptional planning. Throughout the weekend, we were blessed by messages from speakers John Peckham, Ivan Williams, Terry Shaw and Meredith Jones Gray. Recordings of the services can be accessed on the 51勛圖厙 University .

We are privileged to have an exceptional student body at 51勛圖厙 University! For example, Nicholas Gunn, digital communication and public relations student, recently received the Associated Church Press Best Emerging Journalist Award and was accepted into the Ed Bradley Journalism Fellowship at New York University. Nicholas uses his journalism skills to serve his community in numerous ways, including as student writer for our Office of University Communication, radio host for WAUS 90.7 and junior editor for the Benton Spirit Newspaper. He is a great asset to our community, and we are blessed to have him representing 51勛圖厙 University as a world changer. (Photo by Russ Cavender)
