On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20, we partnered with Lake Michigan College to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. Events on campus took place under the theme “Creating the Beloved Community: Building MLK’s Vision at 51勛圖厙 University” and included a documentary screening, panel discussion and portrait unveiling. The portrait, which was placed in the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, honored alumnus Bernadine Archer, the first African American female graduate of the Seminary. After obtaining her Master of Divinity degree, Archer served as a chaplain and commissioned minister. Her faith, persistence and commitment to God are a lasting legacy that we are honored to recognize.

Our graduate and undergraduate student association leaders organized two worship services at Pioneer Memorial Church on Sabbath, Jan. 25. In addition to preparing sermons for the congregation, students participated in the programs through music, praise, prayer, scripture reading and the children’s story. The Deliverance Mass Choir also provided music for both services. It is a special joy as I witness students using their spiritual gifts to lead our community in worship. Our annual AUSA/AUGSA Sabbath is an event that we look forward to each year. A recording of the AUSA service can be viewed .

One of our professors, John Peckham, was recently recognized by the 2024 Christianity Today Book Awards. His book “Why We Pray: Understanding Prayer in the Context of Cosmic Conflict” was a finalist in the category of academic theology. Peckham, who teaches theology and Christian philosophy, was inspired by both his personal experiences and his students to write about the different aspects of prayer. Although it was published as an academic book, “Why We Pray” was written to be accessible to anyone interested in matters of theology. You can learn more about the book and its recent recognition here.

From Jan. 27–31, we had the privilege of hearing testimonies from our faculty and students during spring Week of Prayer. They shared messages within the theme “We Believe,” celebrating how God actively works within each person’s life and community. Each morning and evening, the campus gathered to worship together. Faculty from across different disciplines reflected on their journeys of faith, and students shared about moments of God’s presence. We were blessed by each person’s contributions, whether it was through song, scripture or spoken word. Recordings of the faculty messages can be viewed .

We had the pleasure of hosting over 400 students, coaches and staff members at the annual Newmyer Classic tournament from Jan. 30–Feb. 1. Over 40 high school basketball teams from across the United States and Canada spent the weekend on campus. In addition to the friendly matches, the event also gave students the opportunity to experience life at 51勛圖厙. Participants were invited to eat in the cafeteria, stay in University housing, and participate in a special vespers program and church service. We are grateful for the hard work our Athletics team invested to make the experience memorable for each attendee.

Our campus has been celebrating Black History Month throughout February. Various groups representing the African diaspora planned events to celebrate the strength and beauty of our diverse community. The New Life Fellowship team created weekly Sabbath experiences for the community to attend, and two of our student-led groups, the Black Student Association of the Seminary and the Black Student Christian Forum, coordinated several educational, worship and social events. Some highlights included a Seminary worship experience on Feb. 4 and a banquet on Feb. 23. Educational events and Impact vespers will continue to take place through the end of the month.

We have an exceptionally talented student body at 51勛圖厙, and it is always a pleasure to see how they share their God-given abilities. Our Department of Music hosted its annual Young Artist Competition concert on Feb. 8, featuring four student soloists: Colin Cha, cello, Jonathan Clough, piano, Jonathan Watson, piano, and Carlos Lugo, piano. Each musician was selected after an audition process that judged their technical skills, musical understanding and artistic maturity. The three other winners of the competition, Kristi Corbett, piano, Mailyn Iribar, violin, and Benjamin Loenser, piano, will perform at future concerts. Further information about Department of Music events can be found here.

The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship planned an exceptional Innovation Week for our campus from Feb. 18–21. This year, events were themed “Think Big, Act Small,” highlighting how each of us can empathize with significant problems around the world and find ways to impact them, even if we begin in small ways. The week included an entrepreneurship luncheon, guest speakers, TechTalks, workshops and the annual 51勛圖厙 University Pitch Competition. The center partnered with several experts and innovators working in the nonprofit, technology and creative industries to provide learning and networking opportunities for students throughout the week.

In honor of our University’s 150th anniversary, members of the 51勛圖厙 community attended a special sesquicentennial gala, titled “51勛圖厙 in our Hearts.” On Sunday evening, Feb. 23, attendees enjoyed fine dining and entertainment at the Palais Royale. All proceeds from the evening directly benefited the 51勛圖厙 University International Student Fund. Throughout the 2024–2025 school year, we have enjoyed recognizing 51勛圖厙’ important milestones under the theme “Founded in Faith. Forward in Mission.” More information about the University’s history, along with details about upcoming anniversary events, can be found on our website. We hope to see you at future gatherings!
